Below is a recent inquiry from a potential customer looking for more information on making a particular light measurement:
"My company needs to measure the output of a metal halide lamp operating between 340 and 440 nm. We need to measure the output of this lamp but we have never used a radiometer. We are looking for system that will improve consistency and keep track of the production of this light source for when the bulb starts to go bad.
What type of equipment would you suggest we purchase to achieve these goals? Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions and further my understanding of the subject."

Jill Fowler, ILT's Systems Division Director, answered our potential customer's questions below. Because we thought her answers might help others needing to make this same type of measurement, we printed her response in this ILT blog post:
Thank you for considering ILT as your source for light measurement equipment.
ILT offers a variety of UV-VIS sensors. When selecting a measurement device, it is often important to assure the meter measures the range of light that specifically applies to the process it is being used for (not just the range of light emitted by the source).
You mentioned the lamp emits from 340-440 nm. If you need to capture all of the light over that full spectrum, we have a sensor that covers that range fairly well.
Our XRD340A measures from 325-475 nm. It can be used with our new New ILT2400 hand held light meter, as well as our ILT5000 and ILT1700 research radiometers. It is typically used for Curing/Photoresist applications where the lamp has strong output in the 390 to 405 nm range.
If you are looking for a low profile, continuous monitoring device we can equip an ILT1000 with the same filtration used in the XRD340A.
A picture and spectral curve for this sensor are on the following website page:

If this sensor does not look like the correct fit for your application, please tell us more about your requirements and we can offer advise on additional options.
To select your meter, please take a look at this link:

The ILT1000 is for data-logging to a computer and has no display. It has a built in sensors and is the lower priced unit.
All of the other meters work with remote sensors.
The ILT2400 is a hand held light meter with touch screen display.
The ILT5000 has built in wireless technology, has the broadest measurement range covering very low to very high intensities and comes with a free tablet for displaying the data.
The ILT1700 has been around for over 25 years. It has an excellent reputation and is easy to use in the lab. It is a good bench top model with scientific notation formatted display.
If we can answer any questions for you about measuring light and using ILT light meters, Please do not hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely
Jill Fowler
